Enveloppe pour Valeur Déclarée

Declared-value mail

The two envelope models above were used in Manchukuo. The one on the left comes from the collection of Robert W. Farquhar. It is dated January 23th, 1933 and is of Chinese origin. It should be noted that the "Declared Value" service was not introduced in Manchukuo until January 1934 (1). So Manchu envelopes did not exist. The instructions are bilingual Chinese/English.

The envelope on the right is the one shown by Peter B. Corson in his article "Manchukuo declared-value mail" published in China Clipper. It is dated July 14th, 1939 and is of Manchu origin. The instructions are bilingual Chinese/Japanese. Perter B. Corson also states that he saw only one envelope of this type between 1934 and 1945.
