On 15 September 1932, the Japanese government officially recognised the region previously known as Manchuria as an independent state, to be renamed the "Republic of Manchukuo". The treaty was signed in Hsinking (Changchun) by ambassador Nobuyoshi Mutō on the Japanese side (on the left in the photo) and, on the Manchu side, by prime minister Zheng Xiaoxu (on the right in the photo). This treaty also defined a mutual defence agreement, allowing Japanese troops to be permanently stationed in Manchukuo, and thus justifying the occupation of the country.
