March 1st, 1934 - Postcard from Harbin to Albany (U.S.A.)

Cette carte commémorative est issue d’une série de deux vendue dans une pochette au prix de 10 fen. Son illustration représente le Mont sacré Changbai (長 白 山 ) et le lac céleste. Les quatre caractères sont de la main du premier ministre Cheng Hsiao-hsu et se traduisent ainsi : « La naissance de la civilisation et de la vertu ».

La date d’expédition - 1er mars 1934 - correspond au jour où Henri Pu Yi retrouve son titre d’empereur. Ce nouveau règne devient celui de Kang Teh (康 德 ) « Tranquillité et vertu » il remplace l’ère actuel de Datong (大 同 ). L’avènement impérial est notifié à toutes les chancelleries avec un égard particulier pour la Grande-Bretagne. Les jours qui suivent le couronnement sont animés de grandes réjouissances.

Il est facile de supposer que l’expéditeur assista aux cérémonies et expédia les deux cartes séparément mais au même destinataire. En effet, dans le coin inférieur gauche il est noté « 2/2 ». Habitude de l’époque pour indiquer à son correspondant que plusieurs courriers lui avaient été envoyés. Parfois - pour éviter la censure - le message était ainsi découpé et réparti sur l’ensemble des plis.

This commemorative card is one of a series of two sold in a pouch for 10 fen. Its illustration depicts the sacred Changbai Mountain (長 白 山 ) and the celestial lake. The four characters are in the hand of Prime Minister Cheng Hsiao-hsu and translate as follows: "The birth of civilisation and virtue".

The date of dispatch - March 1st, 1934 - corresponds to the day Henri Pu Yi regained his title of emperor. This new reign became that of Kang Teh (康 德 ) "Tranquility and Virtue", replacing the current era of Datong (大 同 ). The imperial advent is notified to all chancelleries with special regard for Great Britain. The days following the coronation are alive with great rejoicing.

It is easy to assume that the sender attended the ceremonies and sent the two cards separately but to the same recipient. Indeed, in the bottom left-hand corner it is written "2/2". This was customary at the time to indicate to a correspondent that several letters had been sent. Sometimes - to avoid censorship - the message was cut out and spread over all the envelopes.
