October 21st, 1939 - Registered letter from Harbin to New York (USA)

Cette lettre, ou plutôt ce « Premier jour », est à destination d’une adresse dans Brooklyn qui est l'un des cinq arrondissements de la ville de New York (les quatre autres étant Manhattan, Queens, le Bronx et Staten Island). L’expéditeur - un négociant en philatélie - affranchit le courrier avec 4 timbres à 6 fens et la série commémorative, « Achèvement de 10.000 kms de voie ferrée », en paire. Le total est alors de 36 fens ce qui correspond au tarif d’un recommandé simple à destination de l’international. Ces timbres sont annulés avec l’oblitération commémorative de l’événement et un cachet à date du bureau Harbin Taoli est apposé à côté. A ce moment, le postier a un doute quand au poids de l’enveloppe. Il la pèse et constate qu’elle dépasse 20 g mais, sans atteindre 40 g. Un timbre à 12 fens est ajouté (tarif du second échelon de poids)  et il est oblitéré du même cachet à date que le postier n’a pas pris soin de ré-encrer. Deux cachets d’enregistrement de recommandé sont apposés, le premier « Harbin Taoli 435 » au bureau de départ et le second « Harbin Pristan R 446 » annule le précédent. En effet, le N°435 est biffé et le N°446 est ajouté à la main.

Comme il est d’habitude au passage à Moukden, une oblitération et une étiquette de recommandation - prévues sur les courriers à destination de l’international - sont apposées.

This letter, or rather this "First Day", is addressed to an address in Brooklyn, one of the five boroughs of New York City (the other four being Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island). The sender - a philatelic dealer - franked the mail with 4 stamps at 6 fen and the commemorative series, "Completion of 10,000 kms of railway", in pairs. The total cost was 36 fen, which corresponded to the rate for a simple registered letter to an international destination. These stamps were cancelled to commemorate the event and a date stamp from the Harbin Taoli office was affixed next to them. At this point, the postman had doubts about the weight of the envelope. He weighed it and found that it weighed over 20g, but not 40g. A 12 fen stamp was added (second weight step rate) and it was cancelled with the same date stamp that the postman had not taken care to re-ink. Two registered postmarks are affixed, the first "Harbin Taoli 435" at the office of departure and the second "Harbin Pristan R 446" cancelling the previous one. No. 435 is crossed out and No. 446 is added by hand.

As is customary when passing through Moukden, a cancellation and a recommendation label - provided for international mail - were affixed.
