This letter was one of several sent from Harbin between July and September 1944. Its destination, Switzerland, meant that it had to transit via Istanbul. It was one of the last to pass through Sofia (Bulgaria) before this route was closed.
It left Harbin on July 10th, after being opened by the censors and then closed by a suitable tape. It arrived in Istanbul on August 22th, crossed the border and arrived in Sofia on August 24th. A week later, it would have been turned back, as shown by the letter of July 27th. However, despite the possible disruptions created by the ongoing conflict, it arrived in Zurich on September 2nd, 1944.
The delivery time was 54 days, i.e. less than two months. Much shorter than the next mailings, which arrived in Istanbul on August 29th.
